Snow day! snow day! snow day!

Woohoo!!!! Tomorrow we have a snow day!!!!!!!! Yay!!!!!!!!

I'm so happy because having an entire day off of school will give me a chance to get caught up. Not to mention a chance to sleep in!!!! Wahoo!!!!

Today was about as crazy as they come. My supervising teacher had to get a sub (she told me about it yesterday afternoon) because she was getting some tests run and blood drawn and stuff at her doctor's office. So, it's already a bit crazy because she's not there. Early this morning (like, an hour and half before school started), it started snowing. Now, we have three floor-to-ceiling windows and no window blinds in our classroom. So the kids start school, and of course, the snow is far more interesting than I am.

I'm limping my way through the morning, so to speak, and come lunchtime I find out that we are going to be dismissed one hour early. We decided not to trade classes this afternoon, so after lunch I started a movie for the kids. The afternoon was pretty relaxing, kind of a make up afternoon where the kids could watch a movie and make up on any late work they had. We had indoor recess and finally... all seemed to be well...

Dismissal was at 3:05. The time was 3:02, and I'm thinking, this is good, I think I've pulled it off, look at this, everyone is still in one piece. Suddenly from across the room I hear one of my boys yell, "Miss T, I think I'm gonna throw up!" This was accompanied by that pained look that told me that he really was sick. Suddenly, I'm thinking... do I send him to the nurse? Usually we don't send kids to the nurse during the last hour of school. Then I'm like, what the hey, he really looks like he is sick.

So I pull out my stack of clinic passes from my desk and call this student to come over to me. He takes three steps towards me and - BLAH!!! - we have vomit on the carpet. I guide him over to the trash can (meanwhile he makes two more vomit productions) and I just tell him not to worry about a clinic pass, but to take this trash can with him to the nurse and if he has to throw up... well, aim!

Oh my! I love teaching... but I don't love it when kids throw up on my carpet! It's a good thing that God has arranged for me to have a day to recover from these experiences!

  • Oh no! That poor kid! And poor you...you were almost thru the day...

  • I know, Linny, isn't it ironic? But it could've been much worse for me... My older sister told me a story about how she once threw up ON her teacher (the principal had to teach class while the teacher went home to change clothes), and my mother (also a teacher) told me a story about how a student once threw up on her gradebook. My student kindly aimed for a nice, open square of carpet and missed me, my gradebook, all the students' coats, and all the furniture! The trash can may never be the same again, though. :)

As for my student, I think he'll be okay. We've had cold and flu bugs going around our school, which is probably what he has. His mom will make him some warm chicken soup and wrap him up in a blanket, which will be just the cure. I bet he'll be back to causing trouble by next week!

  • That was so funny. Thanks for sharing your experience. It started my day out with a laugh. I'm glad the student is fine and you didn't get any of "it" on you.

  • You're celebrating the fact that you don't have to work. Testament to the fact that you hate your job and the children.

  • So, crallspace, I suppose that means you absolutely detest it when one of your classes is cancelled, or when you have a snow day? You're never overwhelmed with work, you never get behind on sleep, and you never have days that are just really crazy. And of course, you have mastered the art of mind-reading - this is how you are able to tell me that I must hate my job.

I celebrate because it's really, really cold outside today, and I don't want my students waiting for a bus in this cold weather. And I celebrate because this weather gives both myself and my students a chance to catch up and work ahead. And I celebrate because, when I have a snow day, I don't have to wake up at 5:00 or 5:30 in the morning. Get a clue...

  • That doesnt mean that all Dan...
Everyone likes a break every now and then even from stuff they love. I'd love a vacation away from Caleb... just Travis and I. That doesn't mean I hate him... or dislike being with him. Just means everyone needs a break from certain things :-)

  • I celebrate snow days because I can drive my jeep thru the yard and make a complete fool of myself. Yippeee!
I also get an extra day to study for my finals, responsible side of me.

  • Yippee, Princessa!
Can I ride in your jeep with you someday?

Of course... sometimes you gotta hate that side of yourself that makes you be responsible. But I'm glad it's there. That's the side of me that has helped me accomplish my goals and come as far as I have in life.

  • You'll hate that snow day if you have to work an extra lovely spring/summer day in April or June for it. I know I would!

  • Oh, oddly enough, that happened in my fourth grade class as well except the poor girl threw up all over her desk. Geez, hadn't thought about that in years. Thanks. :)

  • Michael, believe it or not, we had a conversation in the teacher's lounge last week that directly relates to your first comment. Our district has allotted only one and a half weeks for Christmas break and a five-day weekend for spring break. As teachers, we agreed that we would prefer to have two full weeks at Christmas and one full week in the spring (plus the assorted half-days and holidays mixed in there), even if it shortened our summer. We have to work so hard, and getting a break (be it a scheduled break or a snow day) is essential every now and then. Sometimes (especially for young teachers like myself, but the more experienced teachers agree) a teacher can really fall behind on grades and lesson plans. It's just a lot of work...

Just like any other professional career. Let me clarify here. I am not trying to say that teachers are superhuman individuals who work a thousand times harder than anyone else in society and therefore are more important than anyone else in society. I think all jobs are important. But as I said, professionals work hard, and it can be a relief periodically to get those breaks.

  • Also, Michael... the really good teachers don't go into the profession because they get summers off. They go into it because they love kids. And like any other career, the really good teachers will spend summers and breaks and such seeking professional development through classes, conferences, workshops, etc.

  • Toilet Bowl, you and princess Drea need to get a clue.... the comment was obsurd, and tongue and cheek. Of course I know that's not what your celebrating snow days means. Jeez.

If anything, it's payback for all the whacko comments you leave at my area. Only difference is you actually mean them... that is the scary part.
